MW3 Multiplayer Point Streak (Analysis)

Digital Warfare Gaming

After further analyzing the multiplayer teaser trailer we can expect at least two new Point Streak rewards.

The recent Spec Ops Survival trailer not only teased the new co-op game mode, but at the ending we got a glimpse of some apparent multiplayer action. One of the major discussions points on our forum (and across the web) has been about the featured killstreaks, which are labelled in Modern Warfare 3 as Point Streaks.

Mainly, there is still a lot of speculation and argument over the device which is deployed in the middle of screen (ultimately killing fourzerotwo). There are a whole range of guesses of what this device is including it being a bouncy betty, an AC-130 honing beacon, or an advanced UAV.

However a member on our forums, Mr. Arrun, was quick to jump in and provide proper identification within an hour after trailer’s release. He believes this device is an Intelligent Munitions System (IMS). You can think of this device as a “smart” mine. In real world combat this system is an alternative to the landmine. It is able to detect enemy targets from bystanders and when fired it launches explosives out of its chambers.

In the multiplayer clip it appears that the IMS is earned via a 4 point streak and we can see that it detonates based off of enemy proximity, much like how a claymore functions. It makes sense to assume that the device would be delivered via an air drop due to the fact other sizeable killstreaks in past games (ie. the Sentry Gun), are delivered that way. Also, since it is a Point Streak reward, as suppose to equipment, it will hopefully be able to withstand a decent amount of damage before it breaks. Remember though, real world devices are often heavily modified to fit into the game mechanics and play style desired by the developers. Check out the video below to learn more about how the IMS works in real world combat:

Two other Point Streak rewards are also shown in the multiplayer clip. After the IMS kills fourzerotwo the other player is rewarded with Juggernaut, a new 14 Point Streak reward. Once it is rewarded the announcer states, “Juggernaut ready for delivery”, but even this quote doesn’t provide much insight into what the Point Streak will provide. The two most common theories lean towards an AI bot being deployed into the match (much like how Juggernauts function in Spec Ops), or this Point Streak will give the player the EOD (Juggernaut) suit which could increase the amount of explosive/bullet damage the player can take before dying.

It also appears that the Predator Missile, first seen in Modern Warfare 2, will be returning. This missile, rewarded somewhere between 4 and 14 points, will most likely remain user controlled via a laptop.

One final thing to note about the Point Streaks is that they appear to be stackable. Not only did the IMS (4 Point reward) earn stillRIZZO the 14 point Juggernaut reward, but once he reached 14 points the meter (bottom right of the screen) reset back to four slots. This could possible mean players have the ability to earn four Point Streak rewards per life (while still only have 3 rewards equipped). It also appears that players may be able to scroll through their earned rewards and use them in any order they want.

But what about the AC-130 kill feed icon?

Most people are just assuming that it is a temporary graphic placeholder. Throughout the whole trailer you can see familiar graphics from past Call of Duty games, like the ACR (MW2) and M60 (CoD4) icons in the Weapon Armory. Plus there was no display of any title, emblem or playercard when fourzerotwo was killed which further suggests the graphic for the game are still being developed. It could be the concept of a playercard is being scrapped for Modern Warfare 3, but it seems unlikely since in past Call of Duty games those graphics provide a majority of the additional unlocks.

Please remember a majority of this article is un-confirmed speculation. We will just have to wait for Call of Duty XP to find out more! More discussion about the Spec Ops trailer can be viewed in this thread».
